2Can lizards be vegetarian?
Flexible guts and microbes help iguanas live off greens. Plants are packed with hard-to-digest fiber and protein, and only 4% of lizards and snakes are full-on herbivores. So scientists have wondered if it’s even possible for most lizards to go veg.
Researchers discovered out that instead of a balanced diet of insects and plants, Ruibal’s tree iguana (Liolaemus ruibali, closely related species), the lizard was raised on a diet of almost all alfalfa-based rabbit chow. Many vegetarian iguanas maintained their weight after being given a balanced diet for forty days. Dissections revealed a possible explanation: Vegetarians’ small intestines had grown 17% longer than others. In addition, their guts were found to be more diverse group of microbes than lizards on the common diet, with higher numbers of a few microbe groups suspected of breaking down fiber in the Journal of Experimental Biology today. These two changes, taken together, may help vegetarians make the most of a bad situation by holding food in their stomach longer and increasing the rate at which they break down and absorb food. Lizards, it seems, are more flexible in their diets than some scientists give them credit for.
